T-Mobile MDA Compact Review

tn_T-Mobile MDA Compact.jpgtn_mda-compact-side.jpgtn_mda-compact-back.jpg

T-Mobile’s MDA Compact is a connected Pocket PC that’s very similar to the popular i-mate JAM, which we reviewed towards the end of 2004. Both the MDA Compact and the SDA, a Windows-based smartphone, are available either on their own or as a bundle with ALK’s CoPilot navigation software.

There is now a variety of connected Pocket PCs available through UK-based operators. O2, for example, has a range including the xda II, xda IIi and xda IIs. What makes the MDA Compact stand out is that only its near-twin the i-mate JAM shares is its very small size.

At just 5.8cm wide by 10.6cm deep by 1.8cm high, the MDA Compact is about two thirds the size of the average Pocket PC, and although at 170g it’s a bit on the heavy side, it fits almost as neatly in the pocket as a mobile phone does. Indeed, seated next to the T-Mobile SDA and the latter is actually slightly taller.

The ergonomics of the MDA Compact are very similar to those of any other Pocket PC. Navigation and shortcut buttons sit beneath the screen. The left edge provides a slider for controlling both call and system volume, a button for the built-in voice notes software and another for the built-in camera. The upper edge houses an SD card slot.

On the bottom edge there’s a 2.5mm headphone jack and the charge/synchronisation connector, which is a mini-USB type. The back is home to the camera lens and a comparatively large self-portrait mirror. The stylus, which is rather too lightweight for our liking, lives in a slot on the right edge of the device, adjacent to the power switch, and there’s an infrared port on the bottom right edge.

Review By Reviewcentre

The concept of this phone is simple - its Pocket PC PDA phone which has been shrunk to the size of a regular Smartphone, whilst retaining key functions of a PDA. It has a reasonably big screen yet it doesn’t look like you’re holding a brick to your ear when you’re making a phone call.

Spec-wise MDA Compact has what you’d expect of a Smartphone - built-in camera, GPRS, tri-band reception, media player, Outlook plus pocket versions of Word and Excel on top. Notable omissions include Wi-Fi, slide-out keyboard large internal memory but it does have an SDIO port so Wi-Fi and flash memory can be added (at extra cost).

Review By Digit-life

Pocket PC communicators have been always considered devices of much controversy, despite the considerable advantages and progressive nature of this platform. It initially implied fixed display resolution and proportions. Previous generation technologies allowed to manufacture rather large (3.5” and larger) TFT displays of a standard resolution (320×240 pixels), which resulted in the increased width of the devices. As a result, large communicators were very discomfortable to use. Mandatory hands-free usage didn’t and won’t do for most users. So these dimensions and display proportions limited the improvement of Pocket PC communicator ergonomics.

If you’re looking for a mobile handset that’s capable of more than just making calls and text messaging, T-mobile’s MDA Compact is worth serious consideration.

It’s one of the latest smartphones designed around Microsoft’s Windows Mobile 2003 SE Phone Edition. The first thing that strikes you about this handset is its size - the Compact looks minute alongside a standard Windows-based PDA.

Review By Infosyncworld

For someone who’s used a Windows Mobile device or two, the T-Mobile MDA will appear almost impossibly small at 108 x 58 x 24 mm and 160 g - the exact footprint of the German T-Mobile MDA Compact, only slightly thicker to accomodate the stealthy slide-out thumbboard which occupies the rear half of the device. The front, meanwhile, plays host to a 2.8-inch QVGA display which, despite sub-par ClearType performance, is both bright and crisp as well as sufficiently large.

Sick Macbooks - Apple MacBook Problems and Solutions

tn_Nokia 6234.jpgtn_Nokia 6234 2.jpg

Nokia unveiled the 3G-enabled Nokia 6234. Featuring a 2-megapixel camera, a 320×240 QVGA color screen, digital music player, stereo speakers and a wide array of features and applications which take advantage of WCDMA mobile broadband services, the Nokia 6234 camera phone will be available exclusively for Vodafone customers world-wide.The Nokia 6234 holds music experience, to be enjoyed via the built-in stereo speakers with 3-D sound effects or headphones. Supporting microSD cards of up to 2GB, the Nokia 6234 photography phone puts a collection of consumers’ favourite albums right into their pockets.

The basic candybar design, all in shiny or matt silver on the front, suggests simplicity. Certainly the large number keys, big and easy to use navigation button, and (extremely small but well spaced) softkeys and call and end keys are easy to find and hit. Most impressive, perhaps in design terms, is that the 6234 is similar in proportions to a Windows Mobile Smartphone. With dimensions of 108 x 46 x 18mm and weighing in at 110g, the 6234 is evidence that the days of chunky 3G handsets are behind us.

The phone’s 2-megapixel camera has 8x digital zoom and takes sharp pictures, and makes a great second camera. However, you shouldn’t take too much notice of the size of the zoom unless a camera specifies that it offers optical zoom – a facility that only appears on the very best camera phones. Optical zoom allows you to zoom in on the subject without losing picture quality. Digital zoom works in the same way as cropping an image on a computer.

Review By Mobileburn

The Nokia 6234 supports a variety of music file formats for stereo playback over wired or Bluetooth stereo speakers if the user chooses to not use the built-in speakers. A microSD/TransFlash memory card slot will allow for expansion of up to 2GB in capacity when the larger cards become available in the near future.

Review By 3g.co.uk

The camera itself is quite good, though, and its 2 megapixles for stills and 640 x 480 maximum resolution for video is not to be sniffed at. The side mounted shutter button combines with the softmenu keys to make the camera nice and easy to use – ‘nice and easy’ being the theme of this handset, it seems.

Review By Cnet

The Nokia 6234, exclusive to the Vodafone network in Australia, is a very simple candybar form factor 3G mobile phone, with a pleasant and minimalist design. It measures in at 47 by 18 by 108 millimetres and weighs a scant 108 grams, making it a smallish 3G phone. That sense of small scale is contrasted starkly with the dialling buttons, which are quite large for a phone of this size. If you’re constantly stabbing at the wrong buttons on other phones, the 6234’s nicely chunky buttons could be very appealing.

Samsung SGH Z400 3G Phone Review

tn_pf389v36m.jpg

The new Samsung Z400 makes significant gains from its forerunner with a range of nifty enhancements and added features. When you?re working on the move, Document Viewer allows you to read files intact in Excel, PPT and Word, as well as HTML, PDF and Text files. In Offline Mode, users can switch off the phone function but revel in embedded content such as documents or photos while on a plane - with savings in battery time, to boot. All-important user memory, at 30MB, is also fully expandable via external Micro SD, to save and store your documents. Bluetooth more often than not saves the day, with mobile printing and wireless connections and sync-ups to your laptop or PDA. Go cordless with a wireless stereo headset, or hands-free with the Speakerphone option. This improved model is specially geared towards maximum productivity in work-oriented activities on the run.

This is a 3G phone, supporting UMTS 2.1 GHz, as well as GSM/GPRS 900/1800/1900 MHz networks. Touted as a business phone, the phone comes with built-in document viewers.

The phone sports a bright 2″ 240×320 pixel resolution (QVGA) LCD TFT display capable of outputting 262k colors. User-accessible memory, while limited at 30MB, can happily be extended using a separate microSD memory card - ideal for storing photos from the 2-megapixel camera or your favorite songs.

The Samsung Z400 also has an integrated music player that can play MP3/AAC/AAC+/e-AAC+. Go wireless with Bluetooth technology. PC connectivity is possible via a USB data cable, and thanks to PictBridge provision, you can print your photos without accessing a PC.

Review By Samsung

The Z400 is a superlative business companion that lets customers view Excel, PPT and Word, as well as HTML, PDF and Text files on the move. The Z400 is also able to be the music companion with Bluetooth ® stereo headset support for listening with freedom. User memory with a fully expandable microSD memory card slot provides enough space to save and store your documents, photos, and music. Boasting a 2 megapixel camera with 4x Digital Zoom, the Z400 lets users instantly capture those special moments or record the moments in high quality color video and with sound.

With A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile) you can wirelessly hook-up over Bluetooth with a pair of compatible stereo headphones and you’ll find the fidelity performance notched up another level. However, with no room to manoeuvre or adapt the audio, the Z400 just sounds one-dimensional.

You can create playlists on the fly and shuffle and repeat songs but this is as rudimentary as the player gets. If you’re looking to use the Z400 as a music player then we advise you invest in an optional 1GB microSD card because the 30MB of internal memory won’t hold a bean.

Sliding the phone up — an immensely satisfying experience given the mechanism’s springiness — reveals a 2-megapixel camera with a large “ego-cam” mirror up top and a curved keypad down below. On the left side are the dedicated volume keys and a MicroSD card slot (unfortunately without a card included). The right side features a camera launch key, shortcut button for accessing frequently used applications, and a covered slot for charging and plugging in the headset.

The Z400 is the first Samsung phone to feature 3G technology in a slider design. The slider design has become hugely popular during the past couple of years, so it’s nice to see a 3G slider on the market. At first glance the Z400 looks like a silver D500 - slightly wider and longer, but substantially thinner. It’s a little heavier than the D500, but nevertheless quite lightweight for a 3G phone.

Samsung SCH-A870 Review

tn_Samsung SCH-A870.jpg

The Samsung SCH-A870, the latest offering from Verizon, is a great midtier with its simple, slim design and a solid feature set. It is a flip phone, which is relatively small and light. It measures 3.6 by 1.8 by 0.85 inches and weighs only 3.4 ounces. Clad in silver and accented in black, the phone looks elegant and feels solid and comfortable thanks to its rounded corners.

The Samsung SCH-a870 comes loaded with features such as Get-It-Now Compatibility, in order to access the latest in games, ring tones, and wallpapers. It is also Mobile Web 2.0 capable, offering access to news, sports, and weather. VibeTonz, which allows the ring tones to vibrate to the beat of the music, is also available along with the VZ Navigator. VZ Navigator works like a mobile Mapquest, giving directions audibly by cell phone. At no additional charge, the phone comes with a Personal Organizer, Speakerphone, as well as Bluetooth compatibility.

Review By Mobiletechnews

The SCH-a870 combines Samsung’s popular clamshell design with a host of capabilities such as Bluetooth wireless technology, speakerphone, Location Based Services such as VZ NavigatorSM, VoiceSignal’s speech recognition, Web browsing and camera functionality. In addition, for those interested in gaming, the SCH-a870 comes with VibeTonz technology which will allow customers to download and feel the beat of games and ring tones.

The internal display measures 1.75 inches diagonally and has 65,000-color support. The screen is bright and colorful, and we liked that we could adjust the backlight timer as well as its contrast. Like most Samsung phones, we could adjust the dialing font to two different sizes, four different styles, and to be with or without hyphenation. We generally aren’t fans of the Verizon menu system because it takes several steps to get to certain applications such as the camera and the Web browser. However, with a dedicated camera button and a programmable shortcut key, we’re willing to forgive that.

The design features both internal and external screens, as well as a two-tone exterior. Display options give users some leeway to customize wallpapers, fonts, and color schemes. And while the camera doesn’t take print-quality images, it does feature various tools for fine-tuning PC-ready photos, as well as color effects for some added fun.

The company chose quite a simple and obvious way to design its own budget smartphone. It’s based on a successful HTC Tornado platform (well known by Riemma/Qtek 8310) without the most expensive components — Wi-Fi and QVGA support, the latter is replaced with a traditional MS Smartphone 176×220 display. The resulting product was redesigned and voila, a new smartphone. This Qtek model was planned to have the 7200 index. But in the light of HTC rebranding, it will get a new name, not yet known at the time this article was written. Right before this article was published, we’ve received unofficial information that the model would be called HTC S310.

The Discovery 655 represents the company’s second edition of their successful Discovery series of Bluetooth headsets. The 655 makes use of the same basic in-ear form factor as the prior model, but has added a much sturdier and stable call control button. The 655 is a very sleek looking black and silver headset with a minimalist design. The device itself is durable and doesn’t seem to attract too many dings or scratches. Not just aesthetically pleasing, the 655 also provides a low weight of 9g (.3oz), and compact measurements of 54mm x 12mm x 9mm (2.1″ x .5″ x .4″).

The controls on the Discovery 655 are dead simple; just a multifunction button on the front and a volume control right underneath. While we liked the multifunction button, we weren’t fans of the volume control as the tiny rubberized buttons were a little tricky to press. The multifunction button flashes blue when the headset is on, then alternates between red and blue when the headset is in pairing mode.

O2 XDA IIs Pocket PC Phone Review

tn_sc0031.jpg

tn_sc001.jpg

The new o2 XDA IIs is a Pocket PC with a built-in mobile phone. Run on the Second Edition of Microsoft’s Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC Phone Edition operating system. The new model adds Wi-Fi (802.11b) to its predecessor’s Bluetooth and infrared, bringing it right up to date as far as wireless connectivity is concerned. These features coupled with a built-in digital camera make the XDA IIs a feature packed handset.

The XDA IIs has had many new changes from the outgoing XDA II, with the two most important ones possibly being the addition of wireless LAN capability, better known as Wi-Fi, as well as a physical keyboard that slides out from behind the device. Wi-Fi (802.11b) support will be a boon for travelling business people, as it will allow them to bypass the GSM/GPRS network altogether and use wireless hotspots to connect straight to the internet, the same way you may through a laptop computer. The keyboard is a convenient addition, although it will gain its fair share of followers and critics due to its miniscule size.

Designed to be the ultimate handheld device for work or leisure use, the O2 XDA IIs provides the ‘X-factor’ that keeps you always connected and lets you get things done no matter where you are. As one of the most powerful handhelds on the market, the Xda IIs gives you more control over the way you work and play.

Other extra changes since the XDA II include the addition of the fourth GSM band, making the XDA IIs a quad-band GSM device, able to work in any GSM network anywhere; a larger battery resulting in longer standby times and talk times, and a ROM upgrade bringing total storage memory up to 96 megabytes of read-only memory, with 44 megabytes available for the user. The rest of the hardware, including the Intel Xscale PXA263 400MHz processor, remain unchanged. Finally, Windows Mobile 2003 has been refreshed with Second Edition for various minor improvements and bug fixes.

Review By Cnet

Running on Microsoft Windows Mobile 2003 SE, the Xda IIs allows users to orientate between landscape and portrait view on-the-fly. The screen’s QVGA resolution has somewhat limited its usefulness. Still, this welcomed feature proves handy for Web surfing or when editing spreadsheets. The 65k-color display is sufficiently bright and well-saturated. Even with the brightness set at mid level, we have no issues viewing it outdoors.

Review By Infosyncworld

Welcome to wireless Nirvana: the XDA IIs offers quad-band GSM/GPRS 850/900/1800/1900 MHz with GPRS Class 8 and 10, Blueooth and Wi-Fi 802.11b. Signal reception for all three radios proved on average very good, and O2 thankfully decided to include a new Bluetooth stack rather than the profile-anemic atrocity found in the XDA II. Profiles abound, and for Wi-Fi the XDA IIs supports both WEP and WPA, as well as 802.1x for added security - a boon for both enterprise users and security-conscious consumers.

Review By Phoneyworld

The XDA IIs is similar in looks to the XDA II, however since we have not reviewed that one , I will just give a brief summary of the physical aspects of the XDA III (IIs / III ; same thing remember). The dimensions are a comfortable 71.6 (W) x 125 (L) x 18.7 (T) mm weighing approximately 210 grams. The largest element of the handset or PDA is of course the huge display. The 16 bit 3.5″ Transflective 65,536 colour LCD itself is of 240 x 320 pixels, touch sensitive of course. The display is extremely sharp and clear and manages to give a good result even in bright sunlight (it is TFT right!). Unfortunately though the Operating system allows a higher resolution of 640 x 480, its not supported by the hardware of the XDA IIs. Then again the trade off of size versus resolution needs some though and I think its just about perfect right now. The XDA III has two buttons at the top which are for the Calendar and Contact book.

Nokia 9300i Communicator Review

tn_large.jpg

“Nokia continues to offer more choices for individuals looking for fully featured smartphones built specifically for business use,” said Niklas Savander, senior vice president of Nokia’s business device unit for the Enterprise Solutions business group. “Our business customers want continuity as well as a constant stream of improvements in our products. The Nokia 9300i delivers just that as it combines WLAN and other features with a suite of powerful applications and email solutions.”

The Nokia 9300i smartphone supports E-GPRS (EDGE) and WLAN 802.11g, five party conference calling via an integrated speakerphone and multiple email clients (with attachments), including BlackBerry Connect, Nokia Business Center, IBM WebSphere, Oracle Collaboration Suite, Seven Always-On Mail and Visto Mobile. The Nokia 9300i smartphone also integrates infrared and Bluetooth capabilities, giving users two different ways to wirelessly synchronize their devices to a desktop PC or laptop, as well as exchange data with other mobile devices.

With the addition of WLAN connectivity, the Nokia 9300i enhances productivity by providing a reliable and cost-effective data connection for downloading large files or email1 with attachments. 80 MB of memory capacity (expandable up to 2GB with an optional MMC card) provides ample space for file storage, and the wide color screen makes it easy to view different types of documents, spreadsheets, presentations and web sites. Add outstanding voice capabilities and the Nokia 9300i enterprise smartphone is a great all-in-one device.

Review By Nokia

The Nokia 9300i smartphone is the ideal phone for business professionals who have a high degree of internal and external interaction. It enables fast and reliable access to email with attachments, office applications, and the Internet so they can receive and share up-to-date information for informed decision making.

The Nokia 9300i adds wireless and support for Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE), which allows for faster data transfer and better voice quality compared to the previous version.

Review By Infosyncworld

With every device maker and their grandmother integrating Wi-Fi, Nokia’s integration of 802.11g connectivity in the 9300i is neither surprising nor a competitive advantage but merely a welcome addition for those who simply cannot live with the bulk of the 9500. Wi-Fi security is comprehensive with WEP, WPA and LEAP on the slate, but disappointingly, setting up an access point manually is impossible; it must be within range, and cannot have a hidden SSID.

Furthermore, as the calendar shows 2006, the lack of 3G is rather disappointing - but at least remaining connectivity remains comprehensive with tri-band GSM 900/1800/1900 MHz and EDGE. Also present are Infrared and Bluetooth with an adequate set of profiles, as well as Nokia’s proprietary Pop-port and USB 2.0.

Now this is a hard one to approach. The Nokia Communicator range has always been evolutionary rather than revolutionary, and there has been very little practical change between models. And let’s not kid ourselves here, Nokia may label the 9300 (and 9300i) a smartphone and not a communicator, but it’s squarely in the clamshell European PDA design, and has been since it launched in the mid nineties. Each model has improved what needed to be improved, but the device has never been about pushing the boundaries of the technology. If there’s a cutting edge to technology then the Communicators have always been a step behind the sharp bit – doing a perfectly good job without risking anything.

Nokia 8800 Sirocco Review

tn_nokia_8800_sirocco.jpg

The 8800 Sirocco Edition’s exterior looks liquid with a dent in its slide and a redesigned keyboard. Some folks are claiming the new model will upgrade the cam from SVGA to a full 2 megapixels. The 8800 has not intention of being a GSM phone currently and there are no availability information yet.

This newest version of the ultra stylish Nokia 8800 does receive a facelift and a newly designed keypad. Word is this information is still unofficial and it seems Nokia has pulled the updated design photos of 8800 from its German website, which used to be here.

While Nokia is playing cat and mouse an online retailer let the pricing info out of the bag, supposedly 1100 EURO’s. Silver 8800’s are done, so we’ll gladly take the new sexy black Sirocco edition.

Review By Gsmarena

The reborn Nokia 8800 SE would have a 2 megapixel camera. It will probably keep the tri-band GSM support, 64MB of internal memory and a 262K color display with a resolution of 208×208 pixels of the original Nokia 8800. Following the current trends, the phone would also feature a well-developed music player and enhanced Bluetooth capabilities, although even the regular Nokia 8800 supported the A2DP profile allowing listening to music on a stereo Bluetooth headset. It is not yet known whether the new edition will have memory card slot.

Nokia’s 8800 is what you might call a sit-there-and-look-pretty phone; despite its stratospheric sticker price, no one ever asked the Vertu-esque handset (or its North American cousin, the 8801) to lead the pack with its spec sheet. Nonetheless, with over a year of market availability under its belt, we wouldn’t mind seeing ‘er put out to pasture, and it looks like Nokia’s on the same page.

Review By Gsmarena

A medium-sized candybar with a lot of nerves, Nokia 6233 is one of the current Nokia handsets that might interest you in case you are looking for non-smartphone 3G solution. What is more, the classic styled mobile offers a great TFT display, great stereo speakers, microSD card slot, and a 2 megapixel camera capable of capturing video in the exciting VGA resolution, just to name a few. Exciting is not the word to use when describing the phone itself, but as you would see if you read further on, it surely packs in some nice features.

While the lack of video call capability is somewhat perplexing, the 6233 tries hard to make up for it with a bevy of other multimedia features included. A 2-megapixel camera with 8x digital zoom is built-in, as is Bluetooth and infrared connectivity, which provides compatibility with Bluetooth car-kits, wireless headsets, and other phones.

In addition to taking quality still images, the 6233 also shoots excellent quality VGA video, and it plays back fluently on its first-rate QVGA resolution display.

Nokia 6125 Review

tn_nokia-6125-3.jpgtn_nokia-6125-1.jpg

Sleek and compact outside, the Nokia 6125 offers excellent performance and a compelling feature set - including a 1.3 megapixel camera, Bluetooth wireless technology and digital music player - in a modern, folding design.

The quadband Nokia 6125 (GSM 850/900/1800/1900) is expected to start shipping during the second quarter of 2006 at an estimated retail price of 230 euros, excluding taxes and subsidies.

Combining the right set of features with excellent usability and keypad ergonomics, the Nokia 6125 has everything in balance. The silver and black colour scheme are complemented by sophisticated detailing and two bright colour displays. Equipped with a 1.3 megapixel camera with 8x digital zoom, video recording and a dedicated camera button, the Nokia 6125 provides excellent on-the-spot photography capabilities.

The Nokia 6125 also offers a range of connectivity options, including Bluetooth wireless technology, infrared and USB, making communication with other devices quick and easy. With multiple messaging cababilities - including MMS, instant messaging, push to talk and Nokia Xpress audio messaging - consumers can conveniently keep in touch with others.

Review By Mobilewhack

The first phone in 2006 from the Nokia stable, the Nokia 6125 is a quadband world phone - at least where GSM 850/900/1800/1900MHz networks are present. The camera offers 8x digital zoom while a dedicated camera access button is provided on the phone. Photos and videos (as well as songs) can be stored on a microSD card.

With support for Infrared and USB connectivity (apart from Bluetooth), this phone is definitely on my list of must-have phones. The integrated music player supports MP3, MP4, eAAC+ and WMA. You also get Visual Radio and an FM tuner. The stereo audio over Bluetooth is just the companion to enhance your listening experience.

Stuffing a pair of able displays and a well-performing 1.3 MP camera into a light and sleek clamshell design, Nokia’s 6125 takes square aim at Samsung’s successful line-up of similarly styled handsets. With only 11 MB of onboard memory (holding 30-40 pictures) out-of-box, we yearn for a bundled USB cable or a memory card for the microSD card slot - but alas, no such luck. On the other hand, the 6125 does sport a comfortable keyboard and user friendly interface, as well as an FM radio and MP3 player; music lovers would do wise to look elsewhere, though. Voice quality proved very good, and a 3.5 hour talk time and 6 days of standby is nothing to sneeze at for €250.

With the XHTML Browser allowing the viewing of compatible web sites. With Email access, you will be having semi-Blackberry capabilities minus the speed. HTC Star Trek i-mate Smartflip Review

tn_6538-1908-400-395-275x500.jpg

Slim it is indeed, and the latest company to jump onto the “load-shedding” bandwagon is i-mate. Known for its feature-rich (and expensive) smart phones, the company sent us its new thin i-mate Smartflip – a clamshell phone, which runs on Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0 operating system.

The EDGE-enabled i-mate Smartflip runs on Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0 with all the familiar applications similar to those on your desktop. This includes Microsoft Direct Push technology which provides up to the minute access to your Outlook email, calendar, contacts, and tasks. The addition of a range of ClearVue document viewers including Word, Excel, PDF & Powerpoint makes this stylish device a complete package for those doing business on the run.

Bluetooth compatible, the i-mate Smartflip also features Hotmail, MSN Messenger, Internet Explorer Mobile and Windows Media Player Mobile, while an in-built 1.3 Megapixel camera, camcorder, MP3 player and interactive gaming add to its attractions as a mobile source of entertainment.

The Star Trek phone is a major innovation to the world famous Motorola Razr. The phone has major similarities with the Razr in looks but not in features. The Star Trek is 15 mm thick as opposed to the Razr which is 13.9 mm. The Star Trek has an external screen, which is surrounded by a chrome circle. Underneath the external display there are three buttons for music playback. Although there are various designs of the phone, the one I am reviewing has the three buttons in chrome color (others are in black).

However the fact that this handset sports a Flat USB, which means its not compatible with any of your current miniUSB cables and power accessories ,wont go down very well with some users.

BlackBerry 7100t Review

tn_BlackBerry 7100t.jpg

The features that BlackBerry is known for do not disappoint – email services and robust messaging services. Put this together with a well packaged phone feature and we have the ultimate communication device. However, to be a Treo competitor, BlackBerry’s features have to step it up a notch in the multimedia and expandability sector.Navigating is rather simple with a few thumb movements and a click placing you in your menu of choice. Unfortunately as your application list grows, so does the amount of time to find your application of choice. Maybe we can hope for a future touch screen?

The RIM BlackBerry 7100t’s address book is limited by only the available memory. Each contact holds eight phone numbers, an e-mail address, and two postal addresses (an additional 250 names can be stored on the SIM card). You also can enter Web pages, personal information, and notes under each name, as well as customize other fields to your liking. Contacts can be organized into caller groups, but you can’t assign ring tones, and there’s no picture caller ID. Other features include a calendar, a memo pad, a task list, an alarm clock, 32 polyphonic ring tones, and a vibrate mode. While the 7100t has 32MB of internal flash memory, it lacks an expansion slot.

Primarily an enterprise product, the 7100t easily connects to Microsoft Exchange and BlackBerry servers as well as Lotus Notes servers using the desktop redirector software. E-mail delivery is in real time, and both messages and the calendar can be synced to the device. If that isn’t enough or if you don’t work for a company that has BlackBerry Enterprise Server installed, you can opt for BlackBerry Web Client, which is included in the T-Mobile package service plan. It allows you to have e-mail messages wirelessly forwarded to your 7100t from up to 10 POP3 or IMAP4 accounts every 15 minutes.

And Nokia today will announce a new, slender e-mail phone with a full keyboard, expected to go on sale next year. But the latest BlackBerry is a real contender.

The 7100t is the first BlackBerry to look, feel, and work like a phone. Measuring 4.7 by 2.3 by 0.7 inches (HWD)—just a smidgen larger than a palmOne Treo 600—and weighing 4.3 ounces, the 7100t fits in your hand and in your pocket. The phone has a high-quality speaker phone and supports Bluetooth wireless head sets. Because it’s a quad-band GSM phone, you can use it overseas. The 2.1-inch, 240-by-260 color display is one of the sharpest we’ve seen, with a powerful backlight.

The 7100’s narrower silhouette brings to mind another converged device - PalmOne’s Treo 600 PDA-cell phone (reviewed here, but even the Treo has a full QWERTY keyboard. The keypad on the 7100 looks much more like that of a traditional cell phone - until you examine it a bit more closely. Then it looks like a strange cross between the two.
