Samsung SCH-A870 Review

tn_Samsung SCH-A870.jpg

The Samsung SCH-A870, the latest offering from Verizon, is a great midtier with its simple, slim design and a solid feature set. It is a flip phone, which is relatively small and light. It measures 3.6 by 1.8 by 0.85 inches and weighs only 3.4 ounces. Clad in silver and accented in black, the phone looks elegant and feels solid and comfortable thanks to its rounded corners.

The Samsung SCH-a870 comes loaded with features such as Get-It-Now Compatibility, in order to access the latest in games, ring tones, and wallpapers. It is also Mobile Web 2.0 capable, offering access to news, sports, and weather. VibeTonz, which allows the ring tones to vibrate to the beat of the music, is also available along with the VZ Navigator. VZ Navigator works like a mobile Mapquest, giving directions audibly by cell phone. At no additional charge, the phone comes with a Personal Organizer, Speakerphone, as well as Bluetooth compatibility.

The internal display measures 1.75 inches diagonally and has 65,000-color support. The screen is bright and colorful, and we liked that we could adjust the backlight timer as well as its contrast. Like most Samsung phones, we could adjust the dialing font to two different sizes, four different styles, and to be with or without hyphenation. We generally aren’t fans of the Verizon menu system because it takes several steps to get to certain applications such as the camera and the Web browser. However, with a dedicated camera button and a programmable shortcut key, we’re willing to forgive that.

The design features both internal and external screens, as well as a two-tone exterior. Display options give users some leeway to customize wallpapers, fonts, and color schemes. And while the camera doesn’t take print-quality images, it does feature various tools for fine-tuning PC-ready photos, as well as color effects for some added fun.
