Supporting microSD cards of up to 2GB, the Nokia 6234 photography phone puts a collection of consumers’ favourite albums right into their pockets.
The basic candybar design, all in shiny or matt silver on the front, suggests simplicity. Certainly the large number keys, big and easy to use navigation button, and (extremely small but well spaced) softkeys and call and end keys are easy to find and hit. Most impressive, perhaps in design terms, is that the 6234 is similar in proportions to a Windows Mobile Smartphone. With dimensions of 108 x 46 x 18mm and weighing in at 110g, the 6234 is evidence that the days of chunky 3G handsets are behind us.
The phone’s 2-megapixel camera has 8x digital zoom and takes sharp pictures, and makes a great second camera. However, you shouldn’t take too much notice of the size of the zoom unless a camera specifies that it offers optical zoom – a facility that only appears on the very best camera phones. Optical zoom allows you to zoom in on the subject without losing picture quality. Digital zoom works in the same way as cropping an image on a computer.

The Nokia 6234 supports a variety of music file formats for stereo playback over wired or Bluetooth stereo speakers if the user chooses to not use the built-in speakers. A microSD/TransFlash memory card slot will allow for expansion of up to 2GB in capacity when the larger cards become available in the near future.

The camera itself is quite good, though, and its 2 megapixles for stills and 640 x 480 maximum resolution for video is not to be sniffed at. The side mounted shutter button combines with the softmenu keys to make the camera nice and easy to use – ‘nice and easy’ being the theme of this handset, it seems.

The Nokia 6234, exclusive to the Vodafone network in Australia, is a very simple candybar form factor 3G mobile phone, with a pleasant and minimalist design. It measures in at 47 by 18 by 108 millimetres and weighs a scant 108 grams, making it a smallish 3G phone. That sense of small scale is contrasted starkly with the dialling buttons, which are quite large for a phone of this size. If you’re constantly stabbing at the wrong buttons on other phones, the 6234’s nicely chunky buttons could be very appealing.
