Nokia 9300i Communicator Review

The Nokia 9300i smartphone supports E-GPRS (EDGE) and WLAN 802.11g, five party conference calling via an integrated speakerphone and multiple email clients (with attachments), including BlackBerry Connect, Nokia Business Center, IBM WebSphere, Oracle Collaboration Suite, Seven Always-On Mail and Visto Mobile. The Nokia 9300i smartphone also integrates infrared and Bluetooth capabilities, giving users two different ways to wirelessly synchronize their devices to a desktop PC or laptop, as well as exchange data with other mobile devices.

With the addition of WLAN connectivity, the Nokia 9300i enhances productivity by providing a reliable and cost-effective data connection for downloading large files or email1 with attachments. 80 MB of memory capacity (expandable up to 2GB with an optional MMC card) provides ample space for file storage, and the wide color screen makes it easy to view different types of documents, spreadsheets, presentations and web sites. Add outstanding voice capabilities and the Nokia 9300i enterprise smartphone is a great all-in-one device.

The basic phone functionality on the front belies the potential when the device is unfolded to reveal a wide colour screen display and a full keyboard.

The Nokia 9300i adds wireless and support for Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE), which allows for faster data transfer and better voice quality compared to the previous version.

With every device maker and their grandmother integrating Wi-Fi, Nokia’s integration of 802.11g connectivity in the 9300i is neither surprising nor a competitive advantage but merely a welcome addition for those who simply cannot live with the bulk of the 9500. Wi-Fi security is comprehensive with WEP, WPA and LEAP on the slate, but disappointingly, setting up an access point manually is impossible; it must be within range, and cannot have a hidden SSID.

Furthermore, as the calendar shows 2006, the lack of 3G is rather disappointing - but at least remaining connectivity remains comprehensive with tri-band GSM 900/1800/1900 MHz and EDGE. Also present are Infrared and Bluetooth with an adequate set of profiles, as well as Nokia’s proprietary Pop-port and USB 2.0.

Now this is a hard one to approach. The Nokia Communicator range has always been evolutionary rather than revolutionary, and there has been very little practical change between models. And let’s not kid ourselves here, Nokia may label the 9300 (and 9300i) a smartphone and not a communicator, but it’s squarely in the clamshell European PDA design, and has been since it launched in the mid nineties. Each model has improved what needed to be improved, but the device has never been about pushing the boundaries of the technology. If there’s a cutting edge to technology then the Communicators have always been a step behind the sharp bit – doing a perfectly good job without risking anything.
